Advanced Tomo Therapy Machine Launched at MGCHRI in Visakhapatnam
An advanced Tomo Therapy Radixact X 9, a cutting-edge precision radiation technology machine, was inaugurated at the Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (MGCHRI) in Visakhapatnam on December 30, 2025. The ceremony was officiated by local Member of Parliament, M. Sribharat, who emphasized the urgent need to address the financial burden faced by many families due to the high costs of cancer treatment.
During his address, Mr. Sribharat noted that a significant portion of cancer patients struggles with treatment costs. He highlighted that approximately 70 percent of these patients benefit from the Arogyasri scheme, a government initiative aimed at providing medical coverage. However, he stressed the importance of reducing costs further, particularly for those not covered under such schemes. He called for collaboration among non-profit hospitals like Basavatarakam and MGCHRI to implement strategies that keep treatment affordable.
Dr. Murali Krishna Voonna, MD of MGCHRI, described the new Tomo Therapy equipment as a landmark addition that enhances the hospital’s capabilities. This installation positions MGCHRI as the first level-3 cancer hospital in Andhra Pradesh. Dr. Voonna assured the audience that no patient has been turned away due to inability to pay. The hospital has actively sought donations to support the treatment of underprivileged patients, demonstrating a commitment to equitable healthcare access.
In his remarks, Dr. Voonna also appealed to Mr. Sribharat to advocate for government subsidies for the HPV vaccine, which is essential for preventing cervical cancer in women. He also urged a reduction in high taxation on medical equipment, which would further alleviate the financial pressures on healthcare providers and patients alike.
Following the inauguration, Mr. Sribharat pledged to voice these concerns in Parliament, emphasizing the need for legislative support to enhance cancer care accessibility and affordability. The introduction of the Tomo Therapy Radixact X 9 represents a significant advancement in cancer treatment technology, promising to improve outcomes for patients in Visakhapatnam and beyond.
As the healthcare landscape evolves, the focus remains on ensuring that cutting-edge technology is accompanied by equitable access, particularly for the economically disadvantaged. The inauguration of this advanced machine marks a pivotal step in addressing these challenges head-on.
