ADB Approves $108 Million Loan to Enhance Mizoram’s Healthcare

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a substantial loan of $108 million aimed at enhancing the public health care system in Mizoram, India. This decision represents a significant step towards reforming the healthcare sector in the state, which has a population of approximately 1.38 million residents.

The initiative is designed to promote equitable access to affordable and high-quality health services, focusing particularly on vulnerable groups such as women, older persons, and individuals with disabilities. According to the ADB, this funding will bolster the capacity of Mizoram’s public health facilities, ensuring that they are adequately equipped to provide comprehensive services under the newly introduced Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS).

Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure

The loan will facilitate improvements across various levels of health care, including primary, secondary, and tertiary services. Key areas of development will include enhancing human resources, service readiness, and institutional linkages. These enhancements aim to create a seamless continuum of treatment for all residents, ensuring that healthcare is accessible and effective.

Mio Oka, the ADB Country Director for India, emphasized the importance of the program, stating, “This programme will help the state roll out its new Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme, which brings all citizens under one health insurance umbrella through a mix of subsidised and contributory mechanisms.” This scheme, approved by the state government in 2023, positions Mizoram as a pioneer in enacting comprehensive reforms in its universal health care system.

The ADB’s support is expected to significantly impact public health outcomes in Mizoram, aligning with the state’s goal to ensure that all citizens have access to necessary health services.
