24-Year-Old Arrested for Extortion Attempt in Pune

A 24-year-old man from Meethanagar in Pune has been arrested following an incident of attempted extortion and robbery on the evening of March 6, 2024. The suspect allegedly threatened residents of a local housing society around 21:30 hours, leading to the filing of a formal complaint with the Kondhwa Police.

According to reports, the trouble began when the suspect believed that members of the nearby society had been informing the police about his business activities. Angered by this suspicion, he confronted residents, brandishing a sharp weapon. One resident, aged 35, attempted to intervene and calm the situation but was met with aggression. The suspect reportedly snatched a gold chain from the resident and threatened him, demanding an extortion payment of Rs 200,000. He warned that serious consequences would follow if the money was not delivered.

The Kondhwa Police confirmed that the man had a previous criminal record, including charges related to violent offenses. Officers noted that the suspect’s behavior indicated a pattern of intimidation towards the community, stemming from his belief that they were conspiring against him.

In their investigation, police discovered that the altercation caused significant alarm among residents, prompting them to take action. The complainant’s description of the events led to the swift registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the suspect.

Authorities are now pursuing further inquiries into the suspect’s background and any other potential victims of his intimidation tactics. The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of local residents and addressing any threats to community security.
