Vijay to Contest Vedaranyam Seat in 2026 Tamil Nadu Elections

Actor-politician Vijay has announced his intention to contest from the Vedaranyam constituency in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This decision comes as his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), finalizes its candidate list and intensifies preparations for the election scheduled for early 2026.

Strategic Constituency Choice

The Vedaranyam seat, located in the Nagapattinam district, has been selected based on a combination of strategic and astrological factors. Party insiders have noted that Vijay has a preference for constituencies beginning with the letter ‘V’, aligning with his branding of “V for Victory.” Other areas under initial consideration included Velachery and Virugambakkam, but logistical evaluations have shifted focus toward Vedaranyam.

Political analysts highlight that Vedaranyam presents a unique demographic profile with a significant population of fishermen and farmers. These groups are considered vital for TVK’s outreach efforts. According to internal party surveys, Vijay is believed to have a strong chance of winning in this constituency, further solidifying it as the frontrunner for his electoral debut.

Current Political Landscape

Vedaranyam is currently represented by former AIADMK minister O.S. Manian, who secured the seat in the 2021 elections with a narrow victory margin. In that election, he faced considerable competition from the DMK candidate, who reportedly performed well, making the constituency politically competitive. In the 2016 elections, Manian won with a substantial margin of nearly 23,000 votes against the Congress candidate.

This constituency holds historical significance as it was the site of a salt satyagraha led by C. Rajagopalachari in 1930, reminiscent of Gandhi’s Dandi March. This rich political heritage adds another layer of importance to Vedaranyam as Vijay prepares for his campaign.
