Veteran Bengali Actress Basanti Chatterjee Passes Away at 88
Renowned Bengali actress Basanti Chatterjee has passed away at the age of 88 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Family members confirmed that she died at her home on the night of October 10, 2023. With a career that spanned over five decades, Chatterjee made significant contributions to both cinema and theatre, appearing in more than 100 films.
Throughout her illustrious career, Chatterjee starred in critically acclaimed films such as Thagini and Manjari Opera, along with popular titles like Alo and Ami Shey O Sakha. She also made her mark on television with notable roles in serials like Bhutu, Boron, and Durga Durgeshari.
Tributes and Legacy
The news of her passing prompted an outpouring of tributes within the arts community. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, stating, “Her death is an irreparable loss to the world of cinema and stage. My deepest condolence to her next of kin.” This sentiment was echoed by fellow actor Bhaswar Chatterjee, who remarked on her enduring talent despite her declining health, saying, “She had been experiencing a lot of physical pain lately.”
Chatterjee’s final television appearance was in the serial Gita LLB, where she fell seriously ill during filming. Her health had deteriorated significantly in recent months, leading to a stay in the intensive care unit before her family decided to bring her home for care. A spokesperson from the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists’ Forum noted that she was under the supervision of nurses at the time of her passing.

Known for her vibrant performances, Chatterjee also had a strong presence in theatre, captivating audiences with her stage plays during her younger years. Her talent and dedication to the craft earned her a beloved place in the hearts of fans and fellow artists alike.
