Thalapathy Vijay’s Theri Re-Release Delayed Amid Scheduling Conflicts

Fans of Thalapathy Vijay are facing another setback as the theatrical re-release of his 2016 blockbuster, Theri, has been postponed. Originally scheduled for January 23, 2026, the decision stems from requests made by the producers of other upcoming films to avoid a crowded release schedule. This announcement coincides with delays surrounding Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, which is currently entangled in legal issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The request to delay Theri came from the producers of Draupathi 2, who urged Kalaippuli S. Thanu, the producer of Theri, to reconsider the release date. A public post from the Draupathi 2 team emphasized the need for support from established producers to ensure a successful launch for their film. The message read, “Requesting @theVcreations kalaipuli s Thanu sir to support upcoming team like us and postpone Thalapathy’s #Theri movie releasing this 23rd January… So kindly support our #Draupathi2 movie to release in main screens and help us for a grand release sir.”

In response to these requests, Kalaippuli S. Thanu announced the postponement through a statement on the platform X. He highlighted the commitment of his production company, V Creations, to promote new directors and emerging talents within the industry. “V Creations’ primary responsibility is to promote new directors, good works, and budding producers. With that aim in mind, the release date of the film ‘Theri’ will be announced tomorrow,” he stated.

Challenges for Jana Nayagan

The news of Theri‘s delay comes at a time when Jana Nayagan is experiencing significant hurdles. The film’s makers have escalated their situation to the Supreme Court, challenging the Madras High Court decision that temporarily withheld the film’s certification. Initially set for release on January 9, 2024, Jana Nayagan faced complications when the High Court directed the CBFC to withhold the film’s certificate. During a recent hearing, the court criticized the film’s producers for announcing a release date without proper certification, suggesting it created a “false sense of urgency.”

In a video message to fans, Venkat K. Narayana, the producer of Jana Nayagan, expressed his regret over the delay, emphasizing that the situation was beyond their control. He acknowledged Vijay’s considerable legacy in Tamil cinema and insisted that the actor deserved a proper farewell after his longstanding contributions to the industry.

About Jana Nayagan

Originally slated for a January 9 release, Jana Nayagan had reportedly generated over Rs 50 crore in advance bookings before the postponement. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film features a notable cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju. Marketed as Thalapathy Vijay’s final film, the anticipation surrounding its release has only increased due to these unexpected delays.

As fans await further updates, the postponement of both Theri and Jana Nayagan underscores the challenges faced by filmmakers in navigating the complexities of the Indian film industry, particularly during peak release periods.
