Social Media Reunites Homeless Man with Family After Weeks Apart
A remarkable story of family reunion through social media unfolded in Chamarajanagar, where a 60-year-old man living on the streets was reunited with his family after weeks of separation. Preetam Singh, originally from Dhanwasi village in the Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh, had come to Karnataka with his family in search of daily-wage work when an unfortunate incident led to his disconnection from them.
Singh found himself stranded, unable to communicate effectively due to language barriers and lacking any means to contact his relatives. He wandered near the Yelandur bus stand, where he spent several nights on the roadside, unaware of how to return home. His family in Madhya Pradesh was left in distress, fearing for his safety.
Police Intervention and Shelter Support
On November 11, the local police noticed Singh’s vulnerable condition and intervened. They took him to the Gnana Sindhu Old Age Home in Santemarahalli, where he received care but remained troubled by thoughts of his family. The superintendent of the old age home, M Mahadevaswamy, along with social worker H B Prakash, made it their mission to help Singh reconnect with his loved ones. Despite the challenges posed by his limited Hindi communication, they were determined to find a way.
Realising the potential of social media, Mahadevaswamy recorded a brief video of Singh and shared it as an Instagram reel. The video was circulated within groups linked to Dindori district, significantly increasing the chances of reaching Singh’s family. It wasn’t long before the right people saw the video. His family recognized him and quickly reached out to the authorities for assistance.
Family Reunion and Emotional Closure
On December 30, Singh’s son, Rajesh Singh Dhurvi, traveled from Madhya Pradesh to Santemarahalli to bring his father home. Following the necessary legal procedures, the Yelandur police formally handed Singh over to his son, concluding a harrowing period of uncertainty and emotional distress for the family.
“The police found Preetam Singh near the Yelandur bus stand and brought him to the shelter. Mahesh uploaded his video on Instagram, which helped trace his family. Later, his son came and took him home,”
Mahadevaswamy told The New Indian Express.
This touching reunion not only highlights the profound impact of social media but also serves as a reminder of the human connections that can be restored across distances. Singh’s story is a testament to the potential of community and technology working together to change lives for the better.
