Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan Reunite for KHxRK After 40 Years
Indian cinema achieved a significant milestone on March 16, 2024, as superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan officially announced their first collaborative project in nearly five decades. The announcement came through a visually striking promotional video released by Red Giant Movies at precisely 12:07 PM, a time that creatively combines the actors’ birth dates—November 7 for Haasan and December 12 for Rajinikanth. Tentatively titled KHxRK, this film marks the first time the two legendary actors have shared the screen since the 1979 classic Ninaithale Inikkum.
Promotional Video Captures Retro Charm
The three-minute promotional video quickly gained traction worldwide, showcasing a “born cool, built retro” aesthetic that celebrates the duo’s storied past in the 1970s and 80s. Both actors don vintage-inspired leather jackets, posing alongside a classic Mercedes-Benz. To evoke their youthful appearances, the production reportedly employs advanced digital de-ageing technology, presenting them with a distinctive “retro swag.”
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, known for his work on Jailer, the promo incorporates the director’s characteristic dark humour and quirky charm. The two icons engage in playful banter, humorously questioning who the true “hero” of the film is, leaving viewers intrigued and entertained.
The teaser is underscored by a vibrant, nostalgic soundtrack composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who has consistently collaborated with both actors throughout their careers.
Production Details and Historical Significance
Red Giant Movies is financing this project, marking their 17th production. Nelson Dilipkumar is confirmed as the director, and this will be his first collaboration with Kamal Haasan. Filming is expected to begin soon, once the actors conclude their current projects. Rajinikanth has recently completed work on Jailer 2 and is set to appear in Thalaivar 173, while Haasan is busy with Anbarivu and the ambitious sci-fi film Kalki 2898 AD.
This reunion of the two cinema giants marks the conclusion of a professional separation lasting over 40 years. In the early 1980s, the duo made the strategic decision to avoid co-starring roles, allowing producers to afford individual leads. Kamal Haasan previously described this choice using a biscuit analogy, stating, “We were separate because they gave one biscuit to both of us. But the half-biscuit makes us both happy now, so we will come together.”
The announcement of KHxRK not only excites fans of Indian cinema but also signifies a pivotal moment in the careers of two of its most celebrated actors. As anticipation builds, the film promises to blend nostalgia with contemporary filmmaking, appealing to both long-time admirers and new audiences alike.
