Linkin Park Debuts in India with Cultural Tribute and Energy
American rock band Linkin Park made a highly anticipated debut in India on March 15, 2024, performing in front of nearly 40,000 fans at Brigade Innovation Gardens in Bengaluru. This concert was a significant moment for both the band and their dedicated Indian fanbase, marking their first-ever live performance in the country as part of their ongoing From Zero World Tour.
The event was notable not just for its scale, but also for a cultural moment that quickly went viral. During the concert, the band’s new lead vocalist, Emily Armstrong, wore an Assamese gamusa, a traditional handwoven cloth representing respect and honor in Assam. As she performed the 2003 hit “Faint,” originally sung by the late frontman Chester Bennington, videos of her outfit choice circulated widely on social media, showcasing a blend of musical nostalgia and cultural appreciation.
Some viewers initially misidentified the gamusa as a ghunghat, which led to clarifications in the comments about its significance. One user emphasized, “That’s a gamusa, not a ghunghat. It’s a traditional Assamese cloth given as a mark of respect.” This moment highlighted the importance of understanding cultural symbols, as many fans praised the band for recognizing local traditions.
Armstrong’s performance sparked a positive response, with concertgoers applauding her stage presence and vocal abilities. Many acknowledged the legacy of Bennington while welcoming the new direction the band has taken. In another heartwarming moment, she donned an Indian cricket team jersey during the performance, further endearing herself to the audience. Both instances were celebrated online, with fans appreciating these efforts to connect with Indian culture.
The band’s co-founder, Mike Shinoda, addressed the audience, sharing their excitement about finally performing in India after years of anticipation. He praised the energy of Bengaluru, earning enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. The setlist featured a mix of nostalgic favorites and newer material, including songs like “Somewhere I Belong,” “Numb,” “In the End,” and “Bleed It Out,” prompting mass singalongs that echoed throughout the venue.
For many Indian fans, this concert represented a long-awaited milestone, as they have followed Linkin Park for nearly three decades. Following the Bengaluru performance, the band is scheduled to headline Lollapalooza India on January 25, 2026, in Mumbai, promising to build on the momentum generated by this landmark event.
The reunion of Linkin Park in 2024 with Armstrong as lead vocalist marked a new chapter for the band, several years after the tragic passing of Bennington in 2017. As they continue to evolve and connect with their audience, the band’s India debut stands as a testament to their enduring legacy and the deep bond they share with fans worldwide.
