Javed Akhtar Declines Border 2 Offer, Calls It Creative Bankruptcy
The upcoming film Border 2, directed by Anurag Singh, is set to premiere in theatres on January 23, 2026. As part of its promotional activities, the production team recently launched a new song titled Ghar Kab Aaoge, a reimagined version of the classic track Sandese Aate Hain from the original Border. This sequel has generated significant buzz, especially among fans of the 1997 film, due to its nostalgic appeal, as many of its songs are reworked from the original.
Fans have been curious about the absence of renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar from the sequel’s musical lineup. It has come to light that Akhtar was indeed approached to contribute to Border 2 but ultimately decided to decline the offer. In an interview with India Today, he expressed his concerns regarding the creative direction of the film.
Akhtar explained his reasoning by stating, “They did ask me to write for the film, but I refused. I really feel this is a kind of intellectual and creative bankruptcy. You have an old song that did well, and you want to put it out again by adding something? Make new songs, or else accept that you cannot do the same level of work.” His comments highlight a growing trend in the film industry where classic songs are being reused instead of creating original music.
The lyricist further elaborated on his viewpoint, questioning the necessity of recreating past hits. He referenced Haqeeqat, a 1964 film known for its memorable songs, stating, “Whatever is bygone, let that be. What is the need to recreate it? We also had a film before us — Haqeeqat — and its songs were not ordinary ones. Those were brilliant songs, but we didn’t use them. We wrote new ones and made completely different songs, and people liked them too.”
Akhtar’s remarks emphasize the importance of innovation in the industry. He believes that filmmakers should strive to create new music rather than relying on the success of past works. “If you are making a film again, create new songs. Why are you depending on the past? You have accepted that you can’t do it and will live with past glory,” he added.
Border 2 is produced by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series in collaboration with J.P. Dutta’s production company, J.P. Films. The film features a star-studded cast, including prominent actors such as Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build around this patriotic war saga, which aims to capture the spirit of its predecessor while navigating the complexities of modern storytelling.
With the film industry evolving, the debate over the recreation of classic songs remains pertinent. Akhtar’s stance serves as a reminder of the significance of originality in creative endeavors. As audiences prepare for Border 2, it will be interesting to see how the film resonates with both fans of the original and new viewers alike.
