Dinesh Vijan Reflects on Stree’s Success After Initial Rejection
Dinesh Vijan, the producer behind the hit film Stree, revealed that he faced significant challenges in securing funding for the project due to its unconventional title. Despite initial skepticism from potential investors, Maddock Films has since established itself as a leading force in Bollywood, particularly with the success of its horror comedy films.
In a recent interview with the Press Trust of India (PTI), Vijan recounted the difficulties he encountered while trying to produce the original Stree, released in 2018. “The last three years have been just unbelievable for us. The number one Hindi film was Stree 2; who would have imagined it? When we made the first Stree, no one was funding me, so I had to make it on my own,” he stated. He noted that the reluctance from other producers stemmed from doubts about the film’s title, which many believed would not resonate with audiences.
The original Stree, created on a budget of just ₹25 crore, went on to gross ₹180 crore globally, solidifying its status as a sleeper hit. The sequel, Stree 2, has proven to be even more successful, bringing in over ₹875 crore, including a remarkable ₹601 crore from India alone. This success has propelled Maddock Films into the spotlight, with their recent release, Chhaava, also performing well at the box office, earning more than ₹800 crore worldwide.
Changing Dynamics in Bollywood
Reflecting on the impact of their successes, Vijan expressed a newfound confidence in pursuing more ambitious projects. “We’re a little more daring now,” he explained. “At the scale that we’re doing it, it is a little larger. Also, it’s the right time to do so, because we want to go to the theatre to experience a little more.”
One of those ambitious projects is Ikkis, a war drama directed by Sriram Raghavan. This film is based on the life of Arun Khetarpal, the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration. The cast includes Agastya Nanda, Jaideep Ahlawat, the late Dharmendra, Sikander Kher, and Simar Bhatia. Originally slated for release on December 25, 2025, Ikkis has now been rescheduled to hit theaters on January 1, 2026.
Vijan’s journey underscores the evolving landscape of the Indian film industry, where unconventional ideas are increasingly embraced, often leading to unforeseen success. This shift not only reflects changing audience preferences but also highlights the potential for innovation within Bollywood’s traditional frameworks. As Maddock Films continues to break new ground, the industry watches closely to see how they will shape the future of Indian cinema.
