Dia Mirza Champions Anubhav Sinha’s Bold Film ‘Assi’
Actress Dia Mirza has publicly praised filmmaker Anubhav Sinha for his latest release, the film ‘Assi’, calling it a significant and powerful contribution to contemporary cinema. The film, which addresses complex societal issues, features an ensemble cast that includes Taapsee Pannu, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Naseeruddin Shah, and Supriya Pathak, among others.
In a heartfelt message shared on her social media, Mirza expressed her admiration for Sinha, stating, “Thank you Anubhav Sinha. For going where no one else goes. For saying what no one else dares to say. But most importantly, for listening to the voice in your heart.” She described ‘Assi’ as “one of the most important films of our times,” highlighting the emotional depth conveyed through its storytelling and performances.
Box Office Performance and Critical Reception
Despite the strong thematic content of ‘Assi’, the film has struggled at the box office. Trade analyst Girish Wankhede noted that the movie failed to resonate with audiences, suggesting that a lack of effective marketing may have contributed to its underwhelming performance. In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Wankhede stated, “When a film doesn’t do well, it means the audience didn’t like it. They didn’t understand what kind of film it was.”
Wankhede pointed out that mixed critical reception and limited star power also played a role in the film’s performance. He emphasized, “Apart from that, the reviews were very mixed. Some people praised the film, some didn’t.” While Taapsee Pannu leads the cast, Wankhede remarked that her star appeal alone may not have been sufficient to draw larger audiences.
The film, which debuted on March 6, 2023, has sparked discussions around its narrative and artistic approach. Viewers have lauded its ambition to tackle pertinent social realities, yet the box office figures indicate a disconnect with mainstream cinema audiences.
Mirza’s enthusiastic endorsement of ‘Assi’ reflects a broader appreciation for films that challenge societal norms. As discussions around the film continue, it remains to be seen how it will influence future cinematic projects in India and beyond.
