Dharmendra’s Legacy: A Star Without a Filmfare Best Actor Win
The legendary actor Dharmendra passed away on November 24, 2023, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in Indian cinema. Over his 65-year career, he starred in more than 300 films, earning the title of one of Bollywood’s most successful actors. Despite his significant contributions to the industry, he never received the coveted Filmfare Award for Best Actor, despite four nominations.
Dharmendra debuted in the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, and his last film, Ikkis, is set for release next month. His remarkable career began after he won a nationwide talent contest in 1958 that led him to Bombay, now known as Mumbai. His first nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award came in 1966 for the romantic drama Phool Aur Patthar, but the award went to Dev Anand for Guide.
In 1971, Dharmendra received his second nomination for his role in the action film Mera Gaon Mera Desh, yet Rajesh Khanna took home the award for Anand. His third nomination followed in 1973 for the masala film Yaadon Ki Baaraat, but Rishi Kapoor was awarded for his debut film Bobby. Finally, Dharmendra’s fourth and last nomination came in 1974 for the drama Resham Ki Dori, where Rajesh Khanna won again for Avishkaar.
Interestingly, Rishi Kapoor later revealed in his biography, Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, that he had purchased the Best Actor award for Bobby for ₹30,000. Rishi expressed his regret over the incident, recounting how he was a young star eager to gain recognition. He stated, “I feel guilty about the fact. I was all of 20-21 years of age…someone told me that, ‘You know, we can get this award, do you want it?’, and I said, ‘Yes, of course,’ and then he said, ‘It will cost you ₹30,000.'”
Despite the absence of a Best Actor award, Dharmendra’s achievements did include a Filmfare Award for Best Film as a producer for his 1990 production Ghayal, featuring his son Sunny Deol. In 1997, he was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by his idol Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan.
As fans and fellow actors remember Dharmendra, his contributions to Indian cinema remain indelible. His journey from a talent contest winner to a beloved superstar highlights both his talent and the complexities of recognition in the film industry.
