Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026 Set to Celebrate Global Theatre
The National School of Drama (NSD) is preparing to host the 25th edition of the Bharat Rang Mahotsav, scheduled from January 27 to February 20, 2026. Recognized as the world’s largest international theatre festival, this event will take place across 40 locations throughout India, showcasing a diverse range of theatrical productions. The festival will feature at least one performance from each of the seven continents, emphasizing its global cultural impact.
The festival will present a total of 277 Indian productions, which includes 136 selected plays and invited performances, alongside 12 international productions. According to the Ministry of Culture, this extensive lineup reflects the festival’s dedication to inclusivity and diversity in the performing arts. Chittaranjan Tripathy, director of the NSD, described the Mahotsav as a “maha kumbh” of theatre, emphasizing its democratic nature as an event “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
Celebrating Diversity in Theatre
The 2026 festival will pay tribute to notable freedom fighters, social reformers, and influential figures in theatre, enriching the cultural experience for attendees. Prof Bharat Gupt, vice-chairman of the NSD, highlighted the festival’s commitment to expanding its linguistic and cultural repertoire. The performances will include productions in languages such as Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tulu, Urdu, Sanskrit, and Tai Khamti, among others. This effort ensures representation of almost all major Indian languages, along with several tribal and endangered languages, showcasing the rich tapestry of India’s cultural heritage.
For the first time, the Bharat Rang Mahotsav will extend its reach to previously underrepresented regions, including Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu, Aizawl in Mizoram, Tura in Meghalaya, Nagaon in Assam, Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, and Rohtak in Haryana. This initiative aims to include performers and narratives from all corners of the country, enhancing the festival’s commitment to showcasing India’s theatrical diversity.
As the event approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a monumental celebration of global theatre, highlighting artistic expression and cultural dialogue on an international stage. This year’s Bharat Rang Mahotsav is set to not only entertain but also to foster understanding and appreciation of the diverse narratives that define the world of theatre.
