Alan Menken Discusses Timeless Disney Influence in Singapore
Acclaimed composer Alan Menken recently spoke in Singapore about the enduring impact of his music on generations of audiences worldwide. As the creative force behind iconic Disney soundtracks, Menken’s work has resonated deeply with audiences, shaping the soundtracks of countless childhoods. His latest project, a reimagined production of Beauty and the Beast, is currently showing at the Marina Bay Sands and will run until January 25, 2026.
Menken, who has been instrumental in the success of numerous Disney films during the Disney Renaissance from 1989 to 1999, reflected on his career during a recent online interview. His impressive repertoire includes classics such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Pocahontas. He emphasized how these films continue to evoke emotional responses, becoming more profound with age. “When the familiar emotional pull of a Disney animated classic meets the life you’ve since lived, you begin to truly understand the meaning of timelessness,” he noted.
A significant aspect of Menken’s philosophy is his belief that children’s films should not be underestimated. He stated, “There is nothing childish about children’s movies.” Menken explained that while he might adjust content for appropriateness, he strives to reach the emotional truth of a story without “writing down” to children. This philosophy is evident in the music of Beauty and the Beast, which retains its emotional depth while appealing to younger audiences.
The current production of Beauty and the Beast marks the first Disney-produced version in over 25 years and includes innovative sets and technology, alongside beloved songs such as “Be Our Guest” and the title track. Menken pointed out that children engage with the story on a level that transcends their understanding of cultural references. “They pick up on the nuances. They’re smart. They’re sophisticated. They are the future,” he said.
Menken’s unique approach to songwriting has contributed to the creation of the “I Want” song genre, a hallmark of Disney’s musical storytelling. In Beauty and the Beast, the song “Belle” introduces the protagonist’s desire for a life beyond her provincial village. The strength of this genre lies in its sincerity, which Menken believes must be woven into the narrative structure of a musical. He elaborated, “What is the emotion that the character feels and what is the emotion you want to convey to an audience?”
The composer also discussed the evolution of his work, citing the unexpected success of Newsies, which initially flopped at the box office but later achieved acclaim on Broadway. Menken’s journey illustrates the importance of resilience and staying true to one’s artistic vision. “Just stick with what’s in your heart,” he advised, highlighting the necessity of respecting one’s creative instincts throughout the ups and downs of a career.
As Menken continues to revisit and adapt his earlier works, he approaches each project with a sense of curiosity. He described the challenge of infusing new life into established narratives while retaining their original essence. “I love writing new musicals and finding the discovery of the musical DNA,” he expressed, emphasizing the excitement of collaboration with new artists.
Reflecting on his remarkable career, Menken remains humble and focused on his passion for music. He shared a piece of advice he would offer his younger self: “Don’t ever fall in love with your own work.” This perspective underscores his belief in continual growth and the importance of allowing others to connect with his music.
As audiences in Singapore enjoy the magic of Beauty and the Beast, Menken’s legacy as a composer who captures the essence of human emotion through music continues to thrive. His ability to create songs that resonate across generations is a testament to his talent and dedication to storytelling.
Tickets for the musical can be purchased at the Marina Bay Sands, where this beloved tale is being brought to life for audiences until the end of January 2026.
