US Lawmaker Warns Trump Risks Losing India Amid Trade Tensions
United States Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove issued a stark warning regarding the future of India-US relations, suggesting that President Donald Trump risks becoming “the president who lost India.” Her comments came during a congressional hearing focused on the US-India Strategic Partnership, where she highlighted the increasing tensions over tariffs, visa fees, and political grievances.
Kamlager-Dove emphasized India’s significance in areas crucial to American interests, such as defence, energy, artificial intelligence, space, and advanced technologies. “The US relationship with India will be defining for both countries in how we place ourselves in the 21st-century world order,” she stated. She pointed out that collaboration through the Quad is vital for maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
As she elaborated on the current state of relations, Kamlager-Dove noted a decline in goodwill that she attributed to policy missteps. She argued that President Trump inherited a strong partnership characterized by an energized Quad, growing defence cooperation, and robust political engagement. However, she accused him of undermining these efforts. “Flush, flush, flush — flushed down the toilet,” she remarked, suggesting that personal grievances have taken precedence over national interests.
Kamlager-Dove’s warning intensified as she expressed concern that Trump’s actions could push India away, even as he appears to be courting relationships with other nations like Russia. She criticized the administration’s trade policies, particularly highlighting the impact of tariffs and a new USD 100,000 fee on H-1B visas. Indians comprise approximately 70 percent of H-1B visa holders, and Kamlager-Dove argued that the increased costs directly harm those who have historically contributed to US innovation in technology, science, and medicine.
The representative also addressed the consequences of a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods and a 25 percent tariff on India-linked Russian oil imports, stating that these measures have stalled high-level diplomatic engagement and contributed to the postponement of the Quad Leaders Summit.
Kamlager-Dove connected these policy decisions to broader regional implications, claiming they are fostering uncertainty across Asia. She pointed out that the escalation of tariffs and the cancellation of diplomatic meetings send troubling signals, especially as China closely monitors the evolving dynamics. She warned that this approach equates to “cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face,” inflicting “real and lasting damage” to the trust between Washington and New Delhi.
In conclusion, Kamlager-Dove’s remarks reflect a growing concern among US lawmakers about the potential deterioration of ties with India, which could have significant implications for both nations in an increasingly complex global landscape. Her call to action emphasizes the importance of re-establishing a cooperative relationship that benefits both countries and the broader region.
