US Ambassador Sergio Gor Meets RBI Governor to Boost Cooperation
US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met with Sanjay Malhotra, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on January 17, 2024, in Mumbai. This meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the realm of technology and trade.
During his visit, Gor expressed enthusiasm for the discussions, highlighting the potential for increased collaboration in various sectors. In a post on the social media platform X, he stated, “Very much enjoyed meeting RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. We discussed areas of increased cooperation, including new state-of-the-art US technology.”
The ambassador’s trip to Mumbai included a visit to the US Consulate, marking his first official engagement in the city. He emphasized the ongoing commitment to strengthen the US-India partnership, particularly in trade matters. Gor noted that both countries are actively engaged in trade discussions, with the next round of talks anticipated soon.
Gor also announced that India would receive an invitation next month to join Pax Silica, a US-led strategic technology initiative aimed at enhancing capabilities in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and critical supply chains. This initiative, launched in December 2023, seeks to create a secure and innovation-driven silicon supply chain, involving key players such as Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Israel.
In his remarks, Gor underscored the importance of collaboration between the United States and India as new technologies emerge. He stated, “As new technologies shape the future, it is important for India and the United States to work closely together from the very beginning of such initiatives.”
The ambassador, who took office recently, reiterated his mission to fortify ties between the world’s oldest and largest democracies. While details of the trade agenda were not disclosed, Gor indicated that follow-up meetings between officials from both nations are forthcoming, maintaining momentum in their discussions.
As the relationship between the US and India continues to evolve, this meeting signifies a commitment to future cooperation in technology and trade, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two countries.
