Punjab Seeks Stronger Trade Relations with British Columbia
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has called for enhanced trade ties with Canada, specifically targeting British Columbia, to foster economic cooperation that benefits both regions. In a recent meeting with David Eby, the Premier of British Columbia, Mann emphasized the longstanding partnership between Canada and India, noting the substantial trade and investment connections that already exist.
“Canada has always been a strong partner for India and Punjab,” Mann stated. “We deeply value this relationship and look forward to strengthening this foundation further.” He highlighted Punjab’s readiness to collaborate with Canadian businesses, focusing on sectors of mutual importance such as agro-processing, textiles, engineering goods, IT services, and renewable energy.
Opportunities for Collaboration
During the discussions, Mann outlined Punjab’s economic advantages, including its robust infrastructure and skilled workforce proficient in English. He pointed out that Punjab ranks among the leading states in India for ease of doing business and operates a single-window clearance system through Invest Punjab to facilitate investor support.
Mann noted the alignment of British Columbia’s expertise with Punjab’s development priorities. “British Columbia’s strengths in sustainable farming, food security, and greenhouse technologies fit perfectly with Punjab’s agricultural modernization goals,” he remarked. He identified significant opportunities in precision farming, post-harvest systems, and value-added food processing.
Education and skill development also emerged as key areas for potential partnership. Mann stated, “Collaborations with Canadian universities in research and vocational training can have a transformative impact on our workforce.” He further emphasized the immense opportunities in healthcare and life sciences for Canadian firms, particularly in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and telemedicine.
Renewable energy was highlighted as a shared priority, with Mann inviting joint ventures in solar parks and bio-energy projects. He expressed optimism about Punjab’s potential for collaboration in sectors such as IT and digital transformation, specifically in areas like cyber security, artificial intelligence, and agri-tech initiatives.
A Call for Engagement and Investment
Mann mentioned that manufacturing and engineering could be high-potential areas for collaboration, citing Canada’s expertise in agricultural machinery and precision engineering as complementary to Punjab’s industrial clusters. Additionally, he noted that Punjab’s agricultural exports, including wheat, rice, kinnow, litchi, and processed food products, are in high demand in Canada, largely supported by the Indian diaspora living there.
He proposed that Canadian companies partner with Punjab to develop high-quality textiles and apparel that cater to the fashion and retail sectors. The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of the Punjabi diaspora in Canada, describing it as a vital bridge for commercial and cultural exchange. He expressed the Punjab Government’s commitment to deepening these ties through various cultural and educational programs.
Looking ahead, Mann invited British Columbia to participate as a Partner Country at the Progressive Punjab Investors Summit 2026, scheduled for March 13-15, 2026, at Plaksha University in Mohali. “This summit will feature special business delegations, sectoral sessions, and high-level roundtable conferences to strengthen trade and cultural exchange,” he said.
He also invited leading Canadian universities to consider establishing campuses in Mohali, positioning the city as an education and skill development hub for the region. “Our objective is to attract Canadian technology and service companies to establish IT and ITeS operations and Global Capability Centers in Mohali,” Mann added.
Assuring Canadian investors of full support, Mann stated, “We will provide tailor-made investment facilitation to Canadian investors.” He extended a warm invitation to Canadian delegations to participate in the upcoming Punjab Investor Summit, emphasizing the potential for a new era of bilateral cooperation that could significantly benefit both Punjab and British Columbia.
In response, Premier David Eby expressed gratitude for the hospitality received during his visit and acknowledged the strong people-to-people ties that exist. “Punjab always resides in the hearts of Punjabis living in British Columbia, and this relationship should be further strengthened,” he remarked. Eby conveyed enthusiasm for closer engagement and reaffirmed his commitment to exploring opportunities for mutual exchange in various sectors, including skill development and energy.
