Pakistan’s Youth Face Unemployment Crisis Amid Economic Struggles
Pakistan is grappling with a significant crisis as youth unemployment remains persistently high, compounded by soaring inflation that is diminishing purchasing power. Many young people in the country are transitioning into early adulthood focused more on risk avoidance than ambition, with an increasing number prioritizing stability over aspiration. A recent report from the American news agency, The Media Line, highlights these alarming trends, released on October 23, 2023.
With approximately 60 percent of its population under the age of 30, Pakistan stands at a critical juncture that could shape its future economically, politically, and socially. The report underscores the potential of Generation Z, the largest and most digitally connected demographic, to influence the nation’s trajectory. However, this potential is threatened by ongoing economic stagnation, political instability, and rising restrictions on free expression, which are prompting many young individuals to disengage or seek opportunities abroad.
The situation is further aggravated by increasing migration, which has led to a diminishing middle class and fostered a belief that hard work and education do not guarantee upward mobility. The report emphasizes that education, historically viewed as a route out of poverty, is failing many young people. Literacy rates remain low, millions are still excluded from formal schooling, and significant gender disparities exist. Girls often drop out of school due to domestic pressures or early marriage, while boys frequently enter the workforce prematurely.
The resulting skills gap has left a substantial number of young Pakistanis unprepared for the competitive, technology-driven economy, particularly in marginalized regions like Balochistan. In these areas, high unemployment and long-standing grievances contribute to a climate of exclusion.
Declining trust in state institutions has added to the challenges. Young people fear repression, which stifles sustained activism. While social media serves as a vital outlet for self-expression, many feel that silence or emigration is a safer option than confronting these issues. Mental health strains are rising, exacerbated by climate-related disasters and the pressures of constant digital connectedness, leading to increased anxiety and a sense of isolation among the youth.
In a conversation with The Media Line, a recent graduate from Generation Z, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed that a survey indicated 67 percent of Pakistani youth are contemplating leaving the country. This statistic emphasizes the urgent need for policies that support and empower the younger generation. The graduate expressed, “Many young people are grappling with rising unemployment, inflation, and limited economic opportunities, creating deep uncertainty about their future.”
According to the report, these challenges, when combined with broader social and political pressures, highlight the necessity for initiatives that enhance access to education, employment, and meaningful participation for the youth.
Anum J Khan, an independent analyst based in Lahore, commented on the paradox facing Generation Z. Though nearly 60 percent of Pakistan’s population is under 30, this group struggles with significantly fewer opportunities for education and economic advancement than their numbers and skills would suggest.
As Pakistan navigates these complex socio-economic issues, the future of its youth hangs in the balance, demanding immediate attention and action from policymakers. The potential of the younger generation remains vast, yet it is threatened by a landscape riddled with challenges that require urgent solutions.
