Maharashtra Budget 2026-27 Prioritizes Women Farmers and Innovation

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has unveiled a comprehensive budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, placing a strong emphasis on initiatives aimed at supporting women farmers, including cowherds, poultry, and goat farmers. This focus aligns with the designation of the current year as the International Year of Women Farmers, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing the role of women in agriculture.

During the budget presentation, Fadnavis introduced several financial incentives designed to assist farmers. Notably, he proposed a one-time assistance of Rs 50,000 for those who consistently repay their loans. Additionally, a farm loan waiver initiative allows eligible farmers with overdue crop loans to receive relief of up to Rs 2 lakh. These measures are part of a broader strategy to improve farmer welfare and stimulate the agricultural sector.

Strategic Initiatives for Agriculture and Infrastructure

The 2026-27 budget outlines various initiatives aimed at boosting agriculture, infrastructure, industry, social welfare, and green energy. Fadnavis’s administration envisions a progressive and sustainable Maharashtra. Among the key plans is a commitment to promote natural farming practices across five lakh hectares, as well as strengthening agricultural value chains for 10 to 15 key crops. This strategy aims to enhance farmers’ access to global markets, thereby increasing their competitiveness.

In a bid to modernize the agricultural sector, the Maharashtra government intends to integrate artificial intelligence and digital platforms into farming practices. Plans include establishing AI innovation and incubation centres at four agricultural universities, reflecting a proactive approach to enhancing productivity and efficiency in farming.

Empowering Women and Economic Growth

A significant portion of the budget is allocated to women’s empowerment programs, particularly the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme. The government aims to expand its efforts to create “Lakhpati Didis,” targeting the establishment of an additional 25 lakh women entrepreneurs by the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year. This investment emphasizes the state’s commitment to gender equality and economic development, recognizing the vital role women play in the agricultural landscape.

The total proposed budget for 2026-27 stands at Rs 7.69 lakh crore. Revenue receipts are estimated at Rs 6.16 lakh crore, while revenue expenditure is projected at Rs 6.56 lakh crore. The state government has articulated a vision of transforming Maharashtra into a one trillion-dollar economy in the near future, with this budget serving as a foundational step towards achieving that ambitious goal.

The initiatives outlined in the budget not only reflect a commitment to agricultural development but also signal a strategic approach to fostering economic growth and social equity in Maharashtra.
