India’s Services Sector Growth Slows as Demand and Inflation Rise

The growth of India’s services sector experienced a slight moderation in February 2024, reflecting a slowdown in new orders and an uptick in inflation. The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Services PMI Business Activity Index declined to 58.1, down from 58.5 in January. A PMI score above 50 indicates expansion, while a score below signifies contraction.

New Orders and International Sales Trends

The February PMI reading suggests continued robust expansion in the services sector. Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, noted, “While new order growth slowed to a 13-month low amid rising competition, service providers saw a notable pick-up in international sales and responded with increased hiring to meet operational needs.”

Panel members reported that enhanced client inquiries and marketing initiatives supported sales for some companies. However, a competitive landscape appeared to restrain growth for others. Notably, exports stood out as services firms reported gains from diverse markets including Canada, Germany, Mainland China, Singapore, the UAE, the UK, and the US. On average, international sales expanded at the fastest pace since August 2023.

Rising Costs and Market Conditions

On the cost front, February data revealed the most significant increase in operating expenses for Indian services firms in two and a half years. This rise in costs could potentially impact pricing strategies and profit margins in the coming months.

The moderation in services sector growth highlights the delicate balance between demand dynamics and inflationary pressures. As companies navigate this evolving landscape, the focus will likely remain on maintaining competitive advantages while managing operational costs effectively.
