India Introduces Labor Reforms, Paving Way for 4-Day Work Week
The Indian government has announced significant reforms in its labor laws that may pave the way for a potential four-day work week. The Ministry of Labor and Employment confirmed that the new labor codes, introduced on November 21, 2025, allow employees to work a flexible schedule of 12 hours per day for four days. This change could enable workers to enjoy three paid holidays each week, while still complying with the total weekly limit of 48 hours.
These new regulations replace a complex framework of 29 outdated laws with four key codes: the Code on Wages 2019, Industrial Relations Code 2020, Social Security Code 2020, and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code 2020. The reforms aim to modernize workplace rights and benefits, enhancing the overall welfare of workers across various sectors in India.
Under the updated codes, employees who work beyond the daily limits will receive overtime pay at a rate of double their regular wage. Additionally, fixed-term employees will now enjoy the same benefits as permanent staff, including leave, medical coverage, and social security. Notably, they will also be eligible for gratuity after just one year of continuous service, a significant reduction from the previous requirement of five years.
Recognition of New Work Models
One of the most noteworthy aspects of the new labor codes is their recognition of gig and platform work. For the first time, aggregators in the gig economy will be required to contribute 1-2% of their annual revenue to worker welfare funds, capped at 5% of total payouts. This provision aims to provide better support for workers engaged in non-traditional employment arrangements, thereby enhancing their rights and protections.
The reforms are also designed to improve the portability and accessibility of welfare benefits across states in India. This will be facilitated through an Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number, which will streamline the process for workers to access their benefits regardless of their location.
These labor reforms are a crucial step towards improving working conditions and ensuring that all employees in India, regardless of their employment status, receive fair treatment and adequate benefits. The Ministry’s commitment to modernizing labor laws reflects a broader effort to adapt to the changing landscape of work in the country, particularly in light of the rising gig economy and the need for flexible working arrangements.
In summary, India’s new labor codes represent a significant shift in the treatment of workers, with the potential introduction of a four-day work week and enhanced rights for gig workers. As the country continues to evolve economically and socially, these reforms may play a vital role in shaping the future of work in India.
