DGCA Reviews IndiGo’s Flight Cancellation Response, Action Pending
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has received a response from IndiGo regarding a show cause notice issued due to extensive flight cancellations. On December 8, 2023, the regulator announced it would assess the airline’s explanations and take appropriate enforcement action as necessary. IndiGo expressed sincere apologies for the difficulties faced by its customers during this disruption.
The DGCA issued show cause notices to IndiGo’s Chief Executive Officer, Pieter Elbers, and Accountable Manager, Isidro Porqueras, on December 6, seeking detailed explanations within 24 hours concerning the significant number of flight cancellations. Following IndiGo’s request for additional time, the deadline was extended to December 8 at 18:00 hours.
In its response, IndiGo stated that the cancellations were due to a combination of factors, including minor technical issues, adjustments related to the winter schedule, adverse weather conditions, and increased congestion within the aviation sector. The airline also cited the implementation of updated crew rostering rules—specifically the Flight Duty Time Limitation Phase II—as contributing to the challenges.
IndiGo highlighted the complexity of operations, noting that it is “realistically not possible to pinpoint the exact cause(s) at this time.” The airline also referenced the DGCA’s manual, which allows for a response time of fifteen days for show cause notices, indicating that additional time is required to conduct a thorough Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
As the DGCA continues to evaluate IndiGo’s submission, the outcome will determine the regulatory actions to be taken. The regulator’s commitment to ensuring aviation safety and accountability is paramount, and it will act based on the findings from this investigation.
The situation underscores the challenges faced by airlines during peak travel seasons and the importance of effective operational management in maintaining service reliability for passengers.
