The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is enhancing its status as a global hub for artificial intelligence with the launch of a pioneering research lab. The new facility is a collaboration between the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi and the American technology leader, Nvidia. Announced on Monday, October 23, 2023, this lab marks the first Nvidia AI Technology Center in the Middle East and aims to drive innovation in advanced robotics and AI models.

The lab will merge TII’s multidisciplinary research capabilities with Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI models and computing power. This collaboration seeks to accelerate development in areas such as humanoid robotics, robotic arms, and quadruped machines. Under the terms of their agreement, TII will gain access to Nvidia’s advanced edge GPU chips, including the newly introduced Thor chip.

In an interview, Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, highlighted the significance of this partnership. “It will be a chip that we will newly use… It’s called the Thor chip, and it is a chip that enables advanced robotic systems development,” Aaraj explained. She further noted that TII has previously utilized Nvidia chips for training its own language models, indicating a solid foundation for their ongoing collaboration.

The establishment of this lab aligns with the UAE’s broader strategy to emerge as a leader in artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. TII serves as the applied research arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council, a government entity dedicated to fostering innovation.

This announcement follows a significant multi-billion dollar agreement signed during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to the Gulf in May 2023. The agreement includes plans to construct one of the world’s largest data center hubs in Abu Dhabi, which will utilize advanced technology and Nvidia’s chips to enhance its operations.

Discussions for the joint lab began over a year ago, and Aaraj indicated that the facility would host teams from both TII and Nvidia, with additional staff being recruited specifically for this initiative. The lab is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI and robotics in the region, further solidifying the UAE’s commitment to technological advancement.

As the collaboration unfolds, stakeholders anticipate significant advancements in the field of robotics, with the potential to influence various sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, and education.
