The city of Mysuru is poised to launch its annual Dasara celebrations, a vibrant festival that honours Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage. The festivities, marked by a variety of religious and cultural events, will commence on September 22 and run until October 2, culminating in the significant day of Vijayadashami. This year, the Dasara festival, also known as “Nada Habba” or the state festival, promises to be a grand affair, showcasing the region’s historical ties to royal tradition since its inception in 1610.

Preparations for the festival are in full swing, with various venues throughout the city set to host a range of activities. Cultural programmes will unfold at iconic locations, including the Mysuru Palace, Jaganmohan Palace, and several theatres, ensuring that the celebrations reflect the vibrancy of Karnataka’s cultural tapestry.

The inauguration of Dasara will be presided over by Banu Mushtaq, the recipient of the International Booker Prize for her collection of Kannada short stories. Her floral offering to the idol of the goddess Chamundeshwari is scheduled to take place between 10:10 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. at the Chamundeshwari Temple, where she will be joined by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and various dignitaries.

Supreme Court Upholds Decision Amid Controversy

Despite the festive spirit, the selection of Mushtaq as the chief guest has sparked controversy. A petition was filed against her invitation, citing her previous comments perceived as anti-Hindu and anti-Kannada. However, the Supreme Court of India dismissed the petition, reinforcing the principles outlined in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, which affirms secularism and equality. The court’s decision came after a reminder from Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta to the petitioner, urging respect for the constitutional values that underpin national unity.

The Karnataka High Court had previously declined to intervene in the government’s decision, allowing the festival’s schedule to proceed without disruption. This ruling is seen as a significant affirmation of the state’s commitment to inclusivity, particularly during such a culturally significant event.

A Cultural Extravaganza Awaits

The Dasara festival promises an exciting array of events, including concerts, performances, and a flower show, all designed to celebrate the region’s heritage. As the city transforms into a vibrant stage for these activities, authorities are implementing comprehensive security measures to ensure the safety of attendees.

Traffic regulations will be enforced, particularly around the Chamundi Hills, where the inauguration will take place. The temple itself has been adorned with flowers and decorations, setting the stage for what is anticipated to be a memorable opening ceremony.

Mysuru Dasara is not just a celebration; it is a cultural extravaganza that captures the essence of Karnataka’s traditions and history. As the city gears up for this year’s festivities, it invites residents and visitors alike to partake in a remarkable experience that honours its past while embracing the future.
