Uttar Pradesh Aims to Lead India’s Pharma Sector with New Initiatives
Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a leader in India’s pharmaceutical industry, according to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. During an address at the annual program of the Chemists and Druggists Federation, Adityanath emphasized the need for the pharmaceutical sector to take serious measures against counterfeit medicines, which pose a significant threat to public health.
Uttar Pradesh is the largest consumer market for medicines in India, housing over 110,000 registered medical shops and employing nearly 500,000 individuals in the sector. Adityanath stated, “The responsibility is immense,” and urged chemists to uphold the integrity of the pharmaceutical business. He asserted, “Maintaining public trust is the biggest capital in the pharmaceutical business. Spurious drugs are a direct threat to public health.”
To bolster the state’s pharmaceutical capabilities, a large pharma park is currently under development in Lalitpur. In a strategic move, former Drug Controller General Dr. G.N. Singh has been appointed as the state’s pharmaceutical advisor to guide this transformation. Adityanath expressed optimism, stating, “This will create new opportunities, ensure better and safer healthcare, boost exports, and generate large-scale employment.”
The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to combat illegal narcotics sales, referencing recent enforcement actions taken in Agra and other districts. He encouraged traders to report illegal activities, assuring them of full government support and protection.
In addition to addressing these pressing issues, Adityanath touched upon recent changes made by the GST Council. The council’s meeting on September 3 resulted in reduced tax rates on medicines and nearly tax-free status for life-saving insurance policies. These reforms are expected to benefit both consumers and traders, enhancing the overall healthcare landscape.
The event saw participation from several key figures, including Minister of State for Food Safety Dayashankar Mishra Dayalu, Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan Shukla, Mayor Dr. Manglesh Srivastava, and BJP State Vice President Dr. Dharmendra Singh, along with representatives from various state medicine associations.
Through these initiatives, Uttar Pradesh aims to not only strengthen its position within the pharmaceutical sector but also ensure safer healthcare for its citizens. The focus on eliminating counterfeit drugs and enhancing the regulatory framework is expected to foster a more trustworthy environment for consumers and healthcare providers alike.
