Mumbai Launches India’s Largest Cruise Terminal to Boost Tourism
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) on Saturday, marking a significant advancement in India’s cruise tourism infrastructure. Located at Ballard Pier in Mumbai, this facility is poised to become the largest of its kind in the country, designed to cater to both domestic and international cruise travelers.
The Mumbai International Cruise Terminal spans an extensive area of 415,000 square feet and has been constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 556 crore. It is expected to handle around one million passengers annually, translating to about 10,000 travelers each day. Although the terminal officially opened on Saturday, cruise operations commenced earlier in April 2023, when Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal initiated the first departures from the site.
Modern Design and Capacity
The MICT features a four-level (G+3) design that allows it to berth up to five cruise liners simultaneously. This capability ensures efficient turnaround times, particularly during peak travel seasons. To facilitate smooth passenger flow, the terminal includes 72 counters for check-in and immigration, while the operational area alone measures around 170,000 square feet. With year-round operations planned, the terminal is prepared to accommodate the demands of a global cruise schedule. Additionally, a dedicated parking bay can hold over 300 vehicles, providing convenient access for both passengers and visitors.
Architecturally, the terminal reflects its coastal surroundings. A wavy ceiling design draws inspiration from the ocean, and the interior is characterized by a minimalist yet functional aesthetic. The facility is not only designed for travelers; it also offers spaces for public leisure, recreation, and shopping, aiming to establish itself as a year-round destination, even outside the cruise season.
Supporting the Cruise Bharat Mission
The Mumbai International Cruise Terminal is a pivotal component of the Indian government’s Cruise Bharat Mission, which focuses on expanding cruise tourism through ocean, river, and island experiences. Authorities aim to handle about 200 cruise ships annually, with each vessel capable of carrying up to 500 passengers.
With its extensive facilities, modern amenities, and strategic location, the MICT is set to enhance India’s presence in the global cruise tourism sector. This initiative not only aims to elevate Mumbai as a luxury travel hub but also promises to boost local tourism significantly, positioning the city on the world cruise map.
