Himachal CM Launches Robotic Surgery Facility, Expands Nursing Seats
On March 15, 2024, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a state-of-the-art robotic surgery facility at the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda, Kangra district. The facility, which cost Rs. 30 crore, aims to enhance healthcare services in the region. Although the Chief Minister intended to attend the ceremony in person, inclement weather conditions prevented his helicopter from landing.
During the virtual inauguration from Chandigarh, Sukhu emphasized the government’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare services closer to home. He stated, “The state government is dedicated to using advanced technology to ensure that specialized health services are available to our citizens.” He also highlighted that a similar robotic surgery facility had recently been established at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Speciality in Shimla.
The Chief Minister outlined a broader vision for healthcare in Himachal Pradesh, explaining that both health and education sectors have been prioritized since the current government took office. He assured that funds would not be a constraint in implementing modern medical techniques in state institutions.
In addition to the robotic surgery facility, Sukhu announced the upcoming installation of a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan machine at Tanda Medical College. This development will provide local patients with access to essential diagnostic services without the need to travel to other states. Furthermore, he mentioned plans to strengthen emergency services across medical colleges in the state.
Another significant announcement was the increase in B.Sc. Nursing seats at Tanda Medical College from the current number to 60. This expansion aims to enhance the nursing workforce in the region as the government seeks to address healthcare needs effectively. Sukhu noted that robotic surgery services would also be introduced in a phased manner at medical colleges in Hamirpur, Chamba, Nerchowk, and Nahan.
In his address, the Chief Minister also mentioned the recruitment of 150-200 para-medical staff across the medical colleges. To further support healthcare development, the state government plans to create 50 new posts for operating theatre radiographers and will offer incentives to high-performing doctors in various specialties.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable officials, including Health Minister Col. (Dr.) Dhani Ram Shandil, Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar, and Ayush Minister Yadvinder Goma. Other attendees included Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board Bhawani Singh Pathania and several local MLAs. The presence of these officials underscores the collaborative effort to enhance healthcare in Himachal Pradesh.
By implementing advanced medical technologies and expanding educational opportunities, the government aims to improve health outcomes for residents and foster a more robust healthcare infrastructure in the state.
