In response to escalating concerns regarding fertiliser shortages and black-marketing, Ganjam Collector V Keerthi Vasan conducted a review of fertiliser availability and supply in the district on August 22, 2023. The assessment aimed to address the ongoing issues faced by farmers and ensure that they have access to essential agricultural inputs at regulated prices.

Regulatory Measures Implemented

During a meeting held in Chhatrapur, Vasan issued a directive to all private retailers, mandating adherence to government-approved pricing. This move is intended to prevent deviations that could exacerbate the current fertiliser crisis. The Collector emphasized the importance of maintaining price stability to support local farmers during this challenging period.

In addition to enforcing pricing regulations, Vasan encouraged PACS with surplus fertiliser stocks to collaborate with other societies. This would allow for efficient redistribution, ensuring that farmers in need can access the necessary supplies. He stated, “If any PACS has an excess amount of stocks available at their disposal, they may tag and supply other PACS for the convenience of farmers.”

Future Supply Considerations

Vasan also indicated that the government is prepared to procure additional fertiliser supplies if the situation requires it. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of shortages and enhance availability throughout the district. The Collector’s actions reflect a commitment to safeguarding agricultural productivity and supporting the farming community in Ganjam.

As the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted potential for a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, further challenges may arise for agricultural stakeholders. The government’s readiness to respond to fluctuating supply needs will be crucial in maintaining stability in the fertiliser market.

The actions taken by Vasan and the local administration are pivotal in addressing the pressing concerns of farmers in the region. Ensuring access to fertilisers at fair prices will play a significant role in supporting agricultural output and economic stability in Odisha.
