Giridhar Parvatam Takes Helm as Director of CSIR-CFTRI
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has appointed Giridhar Parvatam as the new director of the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru. Mr. Parvatam officially took charge of his new role on October 16, 2023. This appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the renowned institute, which is dedicated to advancing food technology and research.
Mr. Parvatam, aged 56, brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He holds both an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Botany, with a specialization in Microbiology, from Kakatiya University in Warangal, Telangana. His career at CSIR-CFTRI began in 1999 when he joined as a Scientist ‘B’. Over the years, he has held various significant positions within the institute, contributing extensively to its research endeavors.
In addition to his leadership role at CFTRI, Mr. Parvatam serves as a professor at the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR). His research interests encompass Food Science and Technology, Microbiology, and Biotechnology, fields in which he has established a notable reputation. He is recognized as a fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the Royal Society of Biology in the United Kingdom, the National Academy of Biological Sciences, and the Indian Botanical Society.
Throughout his career, Mr. Parvatam has also been an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences in Allahabad and the Plant Tissue Culture Association of India. His extensive qualifications and contributions to science position him well to lead CFTRI into its next phase of innovation and research excellence.
The CSIR-CFTRI plays a crucial role in the development of technologies that enhance food quality and safety, making Mr. Parvatam’s leadership essential in advancing these initiatives. His appointment is expected to strengthen the institute’s commitment to scientific research and technological advancement in food science, which is increasingly important in addressing global food challenges.
As the new director, Mr. Parvatam faces the challenge of steering the institute through an evolving landscape of scientific research and public health needs. His experience and dedication to the field are anticipated to drive significant progress at CSIR-CFTRI, ensuring its continued contribution to food science and technology both nationally and internationally.
