The foundation stone for a new underpass, connecting the Naval Armament Depot (NAD) to Visakhapatnam Airport, was laid on March 15, 2024. The project, managed by the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA), carries an estimated budget of Rs 12.5 crore.

PGVR Naidu, also known as Ganababu, who serves as the Government Whip and Member of the Legislative Assembly, attended the ceremony alongside KS Vishwanathan, the Metropolitan Commissioner. The underpass is strategically positioned along the NAD-to-airport corridor, aiming to enhance connectivity and alleviate congestion in the bustling areas of Kakani Nagar and the Naval Armament Depot.

In his address, Ganababu emphasized the significance of the underpass for local residents. He stated that it will facilitate signal-free travel, which is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion. The design of the underpass aligns with the planned metro rail route and complies with the standards set by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Ongoing Infrastructure Developments

Ganababu further noted that multiple development initiatives have already been launched in the Western constituency using funds from the VMRDA. These projects aim to improve urban infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Adding to the discussion, Metropolitan Commissioner KS Vishwanathan shared updates on other infrastructure projects in the region. He highlighted that the ongoing construction of a Road Over Bridge (ROB) is nearing completion and is anticipated to be operational by the end of March 2024. This will further contribute to the enhanced connectivity in the area.

As the underpass project progresses, local authorities and residents alike are hopeful for improved traffic flow and increased accessibility. The project not only reflects a commitment to urban development but also serves as a crucial step towards modernizing the transport infrastructure in Visakhapatnam.
