Teacher’s Recovery Highlights Link Between Addiction and Suicide

On World Suicide Prevention Day, the story of a 32-year-old high school teacher from Karnataka serves as a poignant reminder of the connection between addiction and suicidal thoughts. Ashwin, from Kitta village in Basava Kalyan Taluk of Bidar District, battled alcohol addiction for nearly a decade. His struggle, which began in 2013, escalated over the last four years, leading to devastating personal consequences.
Ashwin’s alcohol dependence grew increasingly severe, with his consumption rising dramatically. “Even when I had a quart of liquor daily, it wouldn’t be enough,” he recalled. “One and a half bottles became normal for my body.” This addiction not only cost him his job but strained family relationships and plunged him into financial difficulties. Frequent conflicts at home and in his community added to the stigma he faced. “I used to feel I couldn’t do anything in life, that I had no energy,” he said. “I even thought of ending my life.”
Experts emphasize that addiction and suicide risk are closely linked. Alcohol, in particular, can lead to impulsive behavior, impairing judgment and increasing vulnerability to self-harm. Bengaluru has previously ranked among the top cities for addiction-related suicides, underscoring the need for effective and sustainable solutions.
In addressing these challenges, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of The Art of Living, stated, “People commit suicide to end their misery. What they do not realize is that it puts them in greater misery.” He likened this to someone feeling cold yet removing their jacket, highlighting the irrationality of such actions in the face of suffering.
A significant turning point in Ashwin’s life came when he joined The Art of Living’s Youth Leadership Training Program (YLTP) in August. This initiative aims to empower youth to lead addiction-free lives. Through the program, Ashwin learned yoga, meditation, and the Sudarshan Kriya breathing technique, which is designed to alleviate stress and enhance mental resilience.
“At rehab, I couldn’t quit my habits. Here I have quit them by my own will,” Ashwin shared, smiling as he discussed his transformation. “Everyone is happy in our house now—especially my father.” Since completing the program, he has not consumed alcohol or cigarettes. He now actively participates in community outreach, traveling with volunteers to conduct Nav Chetna Shibirs, where he teaches meditation and promotes stress management in rural areas.
Ashwin’s recovery illustrates the vital role of community support and holistic interventions in combating addiction-related suicides. Gurudev further noted the importance of discussing the concept of vitality or “prana” in relation to mental health. He emphasized that nurturing life-force energy can significantly impact an individual’s mental well-being.
As India observes World Suicide Prevention Day, stories like Ashwin’s highlight the potential for recovery. With appropriate guidance, resources, and support networks, individuals facing despair can reclaim their lives with renewed hope and purpose. This narrative not only serves as a testament to personal resilience but also calls for broader awareness and action regarding mental health and addiction issues.
