NIT Meghalaya Develops State’s First Indigenous Integrated Chip

Researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya have made a significant advancement by designing and fabricating the state’s first integrated chip (IC). This achievement, developed under the Special Manpower Development Program (SMDP) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), represents a landmark moment in India’s growing semiconductor industry.
The innovative team includes faculty members Dr. Prabir Saha, Dr. Shubhankar Majumdar, and Dr. Pradeep Kumar Rathore, along with PhD scholars Geetima Kachari, Parishmita Goswami, and Deibaphira Suchiang. Their collaborative efforts culminated in the creation of a Finite State Machine (FSM) chip, which was fabricated at the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) foundry using a 180nm process technology.
The FSM chip is designed to enhance precision in irrigation systems and tensiometers, indicating its potential role in advancing agricultural technology in India. This development aligns with the country’s efforts to bolster its agricultural sector, ensuring efficient resource management and increased productivity.
Showcasing Innovation at SEMICON India 2025
This milestone was highlighted during the SEMICON India 2025 summit, where the project was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event served as a platform to underscore the importance of academic research and its contributions to India’s ambition of achieving technological self-reliance.
NIT Meghalaya’s success not only sets a precedent for the state but also reinforces the objectives of the Make in India initiative. This initiative aims to establish India as a global manufacturing hub and drive technological advancements that contribute to a more developed nation, referred to as Viksit Bharat.
The development of the indigenous chip is expected to inspire further research and innovation in the semiconductor field, encouraging collaboration between academic institutions and industry stakeholders. As India seeks to expand its capabilities in this crucial sector, NIT Meghalaya’s achievement stands as a testament to the potential of homegrown technology solutions.
This progress supports the national vision of a self-reliant India, capable of meeting its technological needs while fostering an environment of innovation and growth.
