Heavy Rainfall Causes Severe Disruptions in Panchkula Region

Heavy rainfall in the Panchkula district has led to significant road damage, traffic disruptions, and waterlogging across multiple areas. The incessant downpour caused the Ghaggar River to rise above its danger mark, prompting local authorities to issue a red alert for the region. The Panchkula Traffic Police responded by implementing traffic advisories, urging commuters to use designated alternative routes to ensure safety.
Several key roads, including the bridge connecting Alipur and Khatauli village, suffered damage, cutting off direct access. Commuters were advised to use the Mauli–Raipur Rani route or Mattawala road as alternatives. Additionally, traffic on the Mauli–Barwala road was suspended due to bridge damage, with the Derabassi road recommended as the preferred detour.
In many parts of Panchkula, traffic became slow-moving as potholes and ongoing construction compounded the issues. A particular area of concern was the road near the Vikas Nagar checkpoint, where damage led to significant traffic jams. Other affected routes included the stretch from Barwala Bus Stand to Barwala Bypass and Sukhomajri Bypass to Nawan Nagar T-Point, all experiencing delays due to severe waterlogging.
Heavy water accumulation was reported under the railway bridge from Kuhni Sahib Gurudwara towards Sai Dairy. Traffic movement was also hampered around Amartax Red Light and Majri Chowk due to water buildup, while the road under the bridge from the Industrial Area to Baltana was severely damaged and waterlogged.
Manpreet Singh Sudan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), urged all commuters to adhere strictly to the traffic advisories and exercise caution while driving during these adverse weather conditions.
Rising Water Levels Prompt Emergency Measures
The district administration’s decision to issue a red alert was based on the rising water levels of the Ghaggar River. Citizens were advised to stay away from riverbanks and low-lying areas, and unnecessary travel was discouraged. Those planning to visit hilly regions like Morni were instructed to verify road conditions in advance. The Flood Control Room can be reached at 0172-2562135 for updates.
Heavy rainfall over the weekend also led to severe waterlogging in Sector 15, with numerous houses near Parsuram Chowk flooded. Residents reported that rainwater entered homes, damaging furniture, appliances, and electrical fittings. The local Citizens’ Welfare Association, led by SK Nayar, expressed frustration over the lack of effective drainage solutions. “This issue has persisted for over a decade, yet authorities like HSVP and the Municipal Corporation have taken no concrete action. Citizens are now demanding a permanent and effective drainage solution,” Nayar stated.
Traffic Jams Plague Panchkula-Chandigarh Border
The Panchkula-Chandigarh border experienced massive traffic jams, particularly on the road near Housing Board Chowk and the entry point from Baltana. Commuters reported being stuck for several hours, with one resident noting that his son spent approximately two hours near the Baltana exit while heading to Chandigarh without police presence to manage the traffic.
“All Chandigarh-bound vehicles were stuck at Housing Board Chowk due to the absence of traffic lights or police intervention,” said Partha Banerjee, another resident. “A massive jam occurred from the Panchkula Sector 7 roundabout to Housing Board.”
As the region continues to face the effects of heavy rainfall, local authorities are working to address the situation and restore normalcy for commuters and residents alike.
