The health department has raised concerns following a significant increase in HIV cases in Gohpur, where the number of confirmed infections has reached 52 this year. Alarmingly, nine deaths have been reported, highlighting a worrying trend compared to just five cases documented in 2024. In response to this crisis, health officials are implementing awareness campaigns aimed at curbing the further spread of the virus.

Currently, all individuals diagnosed with HIV are receiving medical treatment and counseling support. In a proactive measure, the health department has initiated awareness programs across several villages, having already completed efforts in nine communities. Plans are in place to extend these initiatives to all villages in Gohpur.

Gohpur Health Officer Niku Moni Mahanta emphasized the critical nature of awareness and testing. “We can only report the cases that are tested here in Gohpur. Some patients may have been tested in Biswanath Chariali and other areas, so the actual numbers could be higher,” she noted. Mahanta pointed to a lack of awareness and modern lifestyle choices as factors contributing to the rise in infections.

The health officer outlined that HIV is transmitted in four primary ways: through unsafe physical contact, contaminated blood, non-sterilized syringes, and mother-to-child transmission. “There is no other route. People must understand this if they want to protect themselves,” she explained.

Intensive campaigns are currently underway across 14 districts, with Gohpur at the forefront. Mahanta reported that the campaign is set to continue until October 12, and includes outreach to sub-centers to further spread awareness. “HIV doesn’t show immediate symptoms; it is a virus that silently weakens the immune system. That’s why testing is crucial if someone suspects infection,” she added.

The health department is urging the public to participate in testing and awareness programs. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve health outcomes, and officials hope that increased knowledge will empower community members to take preventive measures. As the situation evolves, the health department remains committed to addressing this urgent public health challenge in Gohpur.
