New Delhi – On March 9, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a distinctive gift to his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, during his two-day visit to Japan. This gesture, which highlights the rich cultural exchange between the two nations, included intricately designed ramen bowls and chopsticks that reflect both Indian craftsmanship and Japanese culinary traditions.

The gift set features a large brown moonstone bowl along with four smaller bowls, each inspired by Japan’s donburi and soba dining customs. The moonstone, sourced from Andhra Pradesh, is renowned for its unique adularescence and is believed to symbolize love, balance, and protection. Furthermore, the base of the main bowl is crafted from Makrana marble, inlaid with semi-precious stones using the traditional parchin kari technique from Rajasthan.

Additionally, PM Modi presented a beautifully crafted Pashmina shawl to Ishiba’s wife, Yoshiko Ishiba. This shawl, made from the fine wool of the Changthangi goat native to Ladakh, is highly prized for its lightness, softness, and warmth. Handwoven by skilled Kashmiri artisans, the shawl showcases a centuries-old tradition that was once favored by royalty.

The shawl features an ivory base adorned with delicate floral and paisley motifs in rust, pink, and red, exemplifying the exquisite craftsmanship typical of Kashmiri design. It is presented in a hand-painted papier-mâché box, decorated with floral and bird patterns, further enhancing its aesthetic and cultural significance. Together, the shawl and the box not only represent Kashmir’s artistic heritage but also its enduring elegance.

This exchange of gifts underscores the strong diplomatic ties between India and Japan, reflecting a shared appreciation for traditional artistry and craftsmanship. As both leaders continue to strengthen their countries’ bilateral relationship, such gestures highlight the importance of cultural diplomacy in fostering mutual respect and understanding.
