Velavan Senthilkumar Triumphs Over Abhay Singh to Reclaim Title
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Velavan Senthilkumar emerged victorious against Abhay Singh to reclaim the national squash title at the HCL National Squash Championships held on October 12, 2023, in New Delhi. The match concluded with a score of 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8, marking Velavan’s second national title, following his success in 2023.
Intense Rivalry and Tactical Mastery
The atmosphere in the squash hall of the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium was electric, with a crowd supporting the top seed, Abhay Singh. However, Velavan, the second seed, showcased a blend of resilience and tactical prowess throughout the final. This encounter was not just a battle of athleticism but a narrative of overcoming past defeats against his longstanding rival.
Velavan began the match with a clear strategy, aiming to learn from previous finals where he fell short against Abhay. He secured the first two games by utilizing precise shot placement and effective court positioning. His ability to dominate the rallies early on proved crucial.
After losing the third game, where Abhay found his rhythm and took it 11-4, Velavan regrouped. He returned to dominate the fourth game, clinching the match and the championship title. “Every single time we play, it’s different. He has had a good year as well. So today was more of a mental battle,” Velavan reflected in an interview. “I just had to stay in the rallies and keep pushing. That was the difference.”
Anahat Singh Secures Third Consecutive Title
In the women’s category, Anahat Singh, India’s top-ranked female squash player, achieved a remarkable feat by winning her third consecutive national title. She defeated Akanksha Salunkhe in the final with a commanding score of 11-7, 11-6, 11-4. Salunkhe had previously eliminated veteran Joshna Chinappa in the semifinals, setting the stage for this decisive match.
At just 17 years old, Anahat displayed exceptional skill, characterized by precise shot placement, deceptive drop shots, and impressive tactical awareness. Her performance throughout the tournament underscored her status as a rising star in Indian squash.
Both Velavan and Anahat’s triumphs at the national championships not only highlight their individual skills but also the growing prominence of squash in India. With such dynamic performances, they continue to inspire future generations of players in the sport.
