102-Year-Old Kokichi Akuzawa Climbs Mount Fuji, Sets Record

Japanese climber Kokichi Akuzawa has made history as the oldest person to successfully reach the summit of Mount Fuji, achieving this remarkable feat at the age of 102. His accomplishment was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in August 2025.
Akuzawa, a retired livestock farmer from the Gunma region, completed his ascent of Japan’s iconic peak, which towers at 3,776 meters, in early August. Despite facing a serious heart condition, he trained diligently, climbing mountains almost weekly to prepare for this challenge. Reflecting on his achievement, he modestly stated, “I am six years older than the last time I climbed. I reached the summit last time too.”
Overcoming Health Challenges
Akuzawa’s path to the summit was not without difficulties. Earlier this year, he tripped while mountain walking, developed shingles, and was hospitalized due to heart failure. His daughter, Yukiko Akuzawa, 75, noted, “The recovery was so fast that his doctors could not believe it.”
To stay fit for the climb, Akuzawa maintained a rigorous training regimen that included daily hour-long walks and weekly hikes. During the Mount Fuji expedition, he spent three days on the mountain, with two overnight stays in mountain huts. While he struggled with the altitude, he was supported by travel companions, including his granddaughter, who is a nurse.
Despite the demanding conditions, Akuzawa demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience. When asked if he would consider climbing Mount Fuji again, he firmly replied with a “no,” indicating the climb was a significant achievement.
A Legacy of Climbing
This latest climb is particularly noteworthy, as Akuzawa previously summited Mount Fuji at the age of 96. Each ascent highlights not only his enduring spirit but also the unique challenges posed by the mountain, which remains a formidable test even for younger climbers.
Akuzawa’s story serves as an inspiration to many, illustrating that age does not have to be a barrier to achieving one’s goals. His dedication to maintaining an active lifestyle, coupled with his enthusiasm for adventure, resonates deeply in a world where the pursuit of health and well-being continues to be a priority for many.
As the world acknowledges Akuzawa’s extraordinary achievement, it is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to defy expectations and embrace life’s challenges, regardless of age.
