Anish Dayal Singh Takes Charge as New Deputy National Security Advisor

In a significant move for India’s national security framework, Anish Dayal Singh has been appointed as the new Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA). Official sources confirmed this appointment, stating that Singh will oversee internal affairs, which include crucial regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, along with addressing challenges posed by Naxal and Northeastern insurgencies.
Singh, a distinguished officer of the 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS)Intelligence Bureau (IB), as well as leadership roles in both the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
During his tenure as CRPF chief, Singh implemented several key initiatives that significantly enhanced operational capabilities. Notably, he played a pivotal role in combating Naxalism, establishing over three dozen forward operating bases, and introducing four new battalions in regions affected by left-wing extremism. He also ensured security during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the inaugural Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, demonstrating his capacity for managing complex security challenges.
Strategic Initiatives and Leadership Style
Singh’s leadership was characterized by a focus on restructuring and improving the morale of the forces. He initiated a comprehensive realignment of over 130 CRPF battalions, marking the first major restructuring in eight years. This initiative aimed to enhance operational efficiency and provide troops with increased “family time,” significantly reducing the distance between units and their parent centres from 1,200 km to 500 km.
Moreover, Singh introduced “samvaad” (dialogue) sessions with company commanders to collect feedback, a move that garnered widespread appreciation within the force. His approach reflects a commitment to fostering open communication and collaboration among personnel, which is vital for effective operations.
Singh’s appointment as Deputy NSA coincides with the Union government’s approval of a policy that grants honorary ranks to retiring personnel of central armed forces. This policy, which Singh championed, aims to boost the morale of subordinate officers within the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an order endorsing this proposal, originally put forth by Singh himself, to address long-standing concerns regarding stagnation in promotional prospects.
With some constables reportedly waiting as long as 20 years for their first promotion, Singh’s advocacy for the policy underscores his dedication to improving the working conditions and career advancement opportunities for personnel.
As Anish Dayal Singh steps into his new role, his wealth of experience and strategic vision are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing India’s internal security landscape, particularly in sensitive regions that require focused attention and effective management.
