The West Bengal government is set to launch the ‘Shramashree’ portal, a new initiative aimed at providing rehabilitation and financial assistance to Bengali migrant workers facing harassment across India. According to sources within the state government, the portal and a dedicated mobile application will go live next week, facilitating a streamlined application process for returning workers.

The Labour Department has confirmed that the development of the app and web portal is nearing completion. A senior government official stated, “It will be open to the general public next week. This will help migrant workers returning to Bengal apply to the scheme in an easier way.” The initiative comes in response to reports of Bengali migrant workers experiencing harassment and violence, particularly in BJP-ruled states.

Details of the Shramashree Scheme

On August 18, 2023, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the ‘Shramashree’ scheme, designed to support Bengali workers who wish to return home. The scheme offers crucial financial support, including a one-time travel allowance of 5,000 INR and monthly rehabilitation aid of 5,000 INR for up to 12 months, until employment is secured. A helpline, 18001030009, has also been established to assist these workers.

Officials from the state administration engaged in detailed discussions at the state secretariat to finalize the scheme’s parameters. The West Bengal government views ‘Shramashree’ as more than just a financial assistance program; it aims to create a comprehensive safety net for returning workers. This initiative encompasses not only financial aid but also provisions for employment, health, and food security, all designed to reintegrate workers into the community effectively.

Context of the Initiative

The launch of ‘Shramashree’ follows significant concerns regarding the safety and treatment of Bengali-speaking individuals in various parts of India. Chief Minister Banerjee has consistently voiced her opposition to the targeting of Bengali migrants and the discrimination they face. By establishing this scheme, the West Bengal government is taking a proactive stance to support its citizens returning from other states.

As the ‘Shramashree’ portal prepares to open, the West Bengal government aims to ensure that migrant workers have access to the resources they need to rebuild their lives and contribute to the state’s economy. With the ongoing commitment to protect and empower Bengali workers, this initiative is a step forward in addressing the challenges they face upon returning home.
