Cooper Connolly Sets Record with Five-Wicket Haul in ODI Victory
Australia’s Cooper Connolly made a spectacular entrance into international cricket by achieving a record-breaking five-wicket haul during the third One Day International (ODI) against South Africa on August 24, 2025. The match, held at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, saw Connolly leading the Australian attack to a resounding victory by 276 runs.
Connolly, a 22-year-old left-arm spinner, dismantled the South African middle order, concluding his impressive spell with figures of 5/22 in just six overs. His performance made him the youngest Australian cricketer to achieve a five-wicket haul in ODIs, surpassing the previous record held by Craig McDermott, who accomplished the feat at 22 years and 204 days in 1987.
During his remarkable spell, Connolly displayed exceptional skill and composure. He struck first by dismissing Tony de Zorzi, whose pull shot was caught by Alex Carey. Connolly then removed Dewald Brevis, who was on track for a half-century with his score of 49, when he picked out Cameron Green in the deep. Following this, Wiaan Mulder fell to a brilliant diving catch by Marnus Labuschagne, and Connolly continued his onslaught by claiming Corbin Bosch in the same manner. He sealed his maiden five-wicket haul by stumping Keshav Maharaj, expertly executed by Josh Inglis.
Earlier in the match, Australia set a formidable target by scoring 431 runs for 2 wickets. The opening partnership between Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh was particularly remarkable, as they built a staggering 250-run partnership. Head scored 142, while Marsh contributed 100. To add to the fireworks, Cameron Green blasted a century off just 47 balls, and Alex Carey finished with an unbeaten 50 off 37 deliveries. This performance marked only the second time in ODI history that the top three batsmen for a team all scored centuries in the same innings.
In response, South Africa struggled significantly, collapsing to 155 all out. Mulder faced a particularly challenging outing, conceding 93 runs in just seven overs, a performance that ranks among the most expensive in ODI history for bowlers delivering six or more overs.
Despite the loss, South Africa had already secured the series prior to this match. However, the day undoubtedly belonged to Connolly, who celebrated his achievement by raising his ball high in the air, wearing a broad smile that reflected both his accomplishment and the promise of his future in cricket.
