Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital to Launch Tender by September

Preparations for the redevelopment of the Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital are nearing completion, with a formal tender scheduled to be launched in September 2023. V K Prasanth, the MLA for Vattiyoorkavu, affirmed that the project is progressing swiftly and remains on track for commencement before the end of the current term of the state government.
The redevelopment involves the construction of a new super-speciality block, estimated to cost Rs 207 crore. This funding comes from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The proposed design includes a five-storey structure that will feature advanced trauma care facilities, a multidisciplinary intensive care unit (ICU), a 21-bed dialysis unit, super-speciality outpatient services, and a 240-bed inpatient block, all spread over approximately 2.7 lakh sq ft.
Heritage Structures and Phased Construction
To accommodate the new facilities, twelve older buildings, some dating back to 1865, are slated for demolition. Many of these structures possess significant heritage value, leading hospital authorities to secure a no-objection certificate from the archaeology department prior to any demolition efforts. This step underscores the balance between modern healthcare needs and the preservation of historical architecture.
As part of the ongoing project, several hospital units, including casualty, ophthalmic care, chemotherapy, the canteen, paediatric outpatient services, and respiratory medicine, have already been relocated to renovated areas. This strategic move facilitates the phased demolition and construction process, allowing for minimal disruption to hospital operations.
The project initially received sanction for Rs 137.28 crore. However, following a revised proposal that included additional facilities such as the 240 inpatient beds and the dialysis unit, the total cost increased to Rs 207 crore, which was approved by the government earlier this year.
The Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital’s redevelopment is a significant step towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the region, aiming to provide state-of-the-art medical services to the local population. As the tender process unfolds, stakeholders are keen to see how this ambitious project will transform healthcare delivery in Thiruvananthapuram.
