Odisha Government to Recruit 1,840 Doctors and 5,000 Paramedical Staff
Mohan Charan Majhi, the Chief Minister of Odisha, announced significant plans on March 25, 2024, to enhance the state’s healthcare workforce. During a review of the Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department, it was revealed that the government will recruit 1,840 doctors and over 5,000 paramedical staff throughout the state. This initiative aims to address the growing demand for healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas.
The Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of filling vacant positions for professors, associate professors, and assistant professors at medical colleges. These roles are critical to improving medical education and training within the state. A special focus will be placed on tribal-dominated and remote regions, where the government plans to enhance incentives to attract medical professionals to serve in these challenging environments.
Strategic Focus on Healthcare Equity
During the review meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of rationally deploying medical officers to ensure equitable healthcare coverage across Odisha. This approach aims to balance resources and services, making healthcare more accessible to all residents, regardless of their location.
In addition to recruitment, discussions also centered on increasing the number of postgraduate seats in medical institutions. The meeting addressed the need for infrastructure development in medical colleges and the recruitment of additional technical staff. Another significant initiative discussed was the establishment of Integrated Trauma Care Centres in accident-prone areas, which is expected to improve emergency response and care.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to swiftly address concerns raised by doctors regarding recruitment processes, salary structures, and working conditions. He urged Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja to take immediate action on these issues to foster a supportive environment for medical professionals.
Key Officials in Attendance
The meeting involved key figures, including Mukesh Mahaling, the Health Minister, and several high-ranking officials such as Sanjeev Mishra, Finance Secretary, Saswat Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, and Ashwathi S, Health Commissioner-cum-Secretary. Their collective expertise is crucial to implementing these healthcare reforms effectively.
This comprehensive plan by the Odisha government represents a significant step toward strengthening its healthcare system. By investing in human resources and infrastructure, the state aims to provide better health services for its population, particularly in areas that have historically faced challenges in accessing quality care.
