The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for extremely heavy rainfall across Madhya Maharashtra on August 17-18. This warning comes as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal continues to impact weather patterns in the region. The city of Pune is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall beginning August 16, with conditions likely to intensify in the following days.

The IMD has also placed an orange alert for both Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra until August 18. The forecast predicts isolated areas in these regions, including Goa, may see extremely heavy rainfall on August 17, while Madhya Maharashtra is expected to experience similar conditions on August 17-18. The warning for heavy rainfall in the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra has been extended until August 20.

Details of the Weather System

As of 14:30 on Thursday, the low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining regions of the west-central Bay of Bengal, as well as the coastal areas of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, remains stationary. An official from the IMD explained, “The associated upper air cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 kilometers above mean sea level, tilting southwards with height. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across south Odisha and north Coastal Andhra during the next 24 hours. This system may have a significant role to play in the expected upcoming spells.”

This weather event is particularly crucial for the drought-prone Marathwada region, which is anticipated to receive beneficial rainfall on August 15 and 18. This precipitation is expected to provide much-needed relief for agricultural activities in the area.

In addition, Konkan and Goa are projected to experience isolated heavy rainfall on August 15 and 20, with very heavy rainfall expected between August 16 and 19.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during these anticipated weather events.
