Netanyahu Signals Intent for Full Military Control of Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on August 7, 2023, that Israel plans to establish full military control over the Gaza Strip. This statement comes amid rising international criticism regarding the ongoing conflict in the region. Speaking to Fox News, Netanyahu clarified that while Israel does not wish to govern Gaza, it aims to create a security perimeter to ensure safety.
The Prime Minister’s remarks were made prior to a meeting with senior ministers to evaluate potential expansions of Israeli military operations in Gaza. Two government sources indicated that one of the scenarios under consideration includes a phased takeover, which would involve issuing evacuation warnings to Palestinian residents before resuming military actions. Any decision from the security cabinet will require full cabinet approval, which is expected to be discussed by Sunday.
Concerns and Criticism Surrounding Military Plans
Netanyahu’s announcement has prompted strong reactions, particularly from Hamas, which condemned the intentions as a “blatant coup” against negotiations. The militant organization accused Netanyahu of seeking to abandon hostages and escalate violence. Polls show that many Israeli citizens are in favor of negotiating a resolution to the conflict that prioritizes the release of hostages. The situation remains uncertain, particularly regarding whether Netanyahu envisions a long-term occupation or a temporary military operation.
Earlier this year, both Israel and the United States rejected an Arab-backed Egyptian proposal aimed at establishing a Palestinian technocratic committee to govern Gaza after the conflict. The White House has not commented on Netanyahu’s recent statements, nor has President Donald Trump publicly expressed support for a full military takeover.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Amid Ongoing Conflict
As the war continues, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens. Aid agencies have warned of an impending famine, with most of the enclave’s two million residents facing multiple displacements. Local resident Aya Mohammad expressed the desperation felt by many, stating, “Where should we go? We have been displaced and humiliated enough.”
The Israeli military currently asserts control over approximately 75 percent of Gaza. Israeli leaders maintain that disarming Hamas is essential for any future stability in the territory. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 61,000 Palestinians have died due to the ongoing military offensive, with 98 additional casualties reported in just the last 24 hours. The conflict escalated following an attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages.
The issue of hostages remains central to discussions in Israel. It is believed that about 50 hostages are still held in Gaza, with around 20 reported to be alive. The international community has reacted with alarm to videos showing some of the remaining hostages in frail conditions. The Hostages Families Forum has urged military leadership to reconsider expanding the war and to pursue diplomatic solutions for their release.
Meanwhile, members of Netanyahu’s far-right coalition continue to advocate for a complete military occupation and the reinstatement of Israeli settlements in Gaza. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has expressed optimism regarding cabinet approval for a full military takeover. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the military would enforce any government decision until its objectives are met.
As the situation evolves, the prospects for peace and stability in Gaza remain precarious, with the international community closely monitoring developments.
