Bruno Fernandes Critiques Manchester United’s ‘Lazy’ Performance in Draw Against Everton

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes expressed disappointment in his team’s performance after a 2-2 draw against Everton during a pre-season match in Atlanta, Georgia. The match, held on July 30, 2024, saw United take the lead with Fernandes’s early goal, only for Everton to equalize through Iliman Ndiaye. A second-half strike from Mason Mount briefly restored hope for United, but an own goal by Ayden Heaven in the 75th minute ultimately secured a draw for the Premier League rivals.

Following the match, Fernandes criticized his teammates for exhibiting a “lazy” attitude on the field. He stressed the importance of improving performance as the team aims for a better season after finishing 15th in the Premier League standings during the 2024-25 season. “We didn’t want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn’t the best and we were a little bit lazy today,” he stated in an interview with NBC Sports. He emphasized the need for heightened focus, warning that “with laziness you can pay at any moment.”

United’s pre-season tour of the United States had included victories over West Ham United and Bournemouth, which had raised expectations. However, the draw against Everton highlighted lingering issues within the squad. Fernandes remarked on the necessity for further reinforcements, pointing out that while new players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have joined the team, more depth and competition are required for success.

“It’s improving. But it’s not the place it needs to be,” Fernandes noted. He acknowledged the club’s financial constraints but insisted on the importance of adding quality players to foster competition and drive performance. “I think that is what the club is trying to do. Hopefully, we can get one or two players more to help with that,” he added.

In response to Fernandes’s comments, manager Ruben Amorim expressed support for his players’ critical reflections. He stated, “I think I’m happy for the players to have that feeling. It’s saying that they understand the situation. So, it’s a good feeling.” Amorim also noted that the team had made significant progress during their pre-season training and emphasized the need for continued improvement as they approach the start of the new season.
