MS Dhoni Assesses CSK’s Struggles, Promises Improvement for IPL 2026

After a disappointing performance in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), where the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finished at the bottom of the table, former captain MS Dhoni has provided an honest evaluation of the team’s challenges and future prospects. Speaking at a private event, Dhoni addressed the batting struggles that hindered the five-time champions and expressed optimism about the upcoming season.
During the IPL 2025 campaign, CSK managed to win only four out of 14 matches, significantly affected by the absence of an in-form top order. Dhoni took over the captaincy mid-way through the season following an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The return of Gaikwad is seen as crucial for CSK’s revival. “We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,” Dhoni stated.
Gaikwad’s injury, sustained early in the season, left CSK vulnerable, as the team struggled to establish a settled middle order. The 27-year-old last played for CSK on April 8 against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur. Although he briefly agreed to play county cricket for Yorkshire, he later withdrew, citing personal reasons. Gaikwad has recently been selected for the West Zone squad in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, signalling his return to competitive cricket.
Addressing Team Shortcomings and Future Plans
Dhoni also reflected on CSK’s prolonged struggles over the past two seasons, highlighting the need for change ahead of the IPL mini-auction scheduled for December. “I won’t say we slacked off. But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in,” he explained.
With consecutive underwhelming seasons behind them, Dhoni emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes. “Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also,” he remarked.
Despite addressing team dynamics, Dhoni did not clarify his future with CSK. Following the last match of the season, he hinted at considering his next steps based on how his body recovers. His future remains uncertain as fans await his decision for the next IPL season.
As CSK prepares for the next chapter, the focus will be on rebuilding the team and addressing the issues that led to their disappointing performance in IPL 2025. With key players returning and strategic changes on the horizon, there is hope for a revitalized CSK in the upcoming season.
