Amit Shah Criticizes Congress for India’s UNSC Membership Bid

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directly accused the Congress party of hindering India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Shah traced the roots of the issue back to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, attributing a lack of strength in foreign policy to successive Congress governments, particularly in dealing with Pakistan and China.
Shah stated, “Today, China is in the UN Security Council, and India is not.” He emphasized that the current administration under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making significant efforts to secure India’s position in the UNSC. He criticized Nehru’s historical stance, claiming it has contributed to India’s absence from the influential body.
The Home Minister highlighted a specific incident, recalling that during a confrontation between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Doklam, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was reportedly meeting with the Chinese ambassador. Shah asserted that this “love for China has passed down three generations” from Nehru to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.
This statement sparked a response from the opposition. DMK MP Kanimozhi challenged Shah’s remarks regarding Nehru, stating, “It seems you people in the BJP remember Nehru much more than even his party Congress does. You say he is responsible for all the mistakes.” She urged the government to focus on national unity rather than division among political parties.
The debate highlighted the ongoing tension between the ruling party and the opposition regarding foreign policy and national security. Shah’s comments underscore the BJP’s strategy of attributing historical failures to the Congress party while promoting the Modi administration’s current efforts to enhance India’s global standing.
As discussions about India’s role in international affairs continue, the focus remains on the potential path forward for achieving permanent membership in the UNSC, a goal that has garnered attention from various sectors of Indian society.
