Ben Stokes’ Fitness in Question Ahead of Final Day vs India

As the fourth Test between England and India approaches its final day, uncertainty surrounds the availability of England captain Ben Stokes for bowling duties. Stokes, who delivered a remarkable performance in the first innings with five wickets, was unable to bowl in India’s second innings due to stiffness and soreness.
Marcus Trescothick, England’s assistant coach, indicated that the team would assess Stokes’ condition on Sunday before making any decisions regarding his participation. Stokes had previously retired hurt with cramp during Day 3, raising concerns about his fitness. Despite this, he managed to bat through the morning session on Saturday, starting the day at 77* and ultimately scoring 141 runs, marking his first Test century in two years.
Trescothick expressed optimism that Stokes would improve by Sunday, stating, “We are still hopeful he will be better tomorrow and come back out, be a bit looser and ready to go again.” He emphasized the importance of monitoring Stokes’ recovery overnight, as the team prepares for a crucial final day.
Despite Stokes’ absence from bowling in the second innings, England appeared well-positioned for victory early on. Chris Woakes made an impactful start, dismissing both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks in the first over, leaving India at 0/2. However, Indian captain Shubman Gill and opener KL Rahul formed a resilient partnership, batting through 62.1 overs and building an unbeaten stand of 174 runs.
As the situation develops, India will rely heavily on Gill and Rahul to continue their defensive strategy and bat out as many overs as possible on Day 5. England’s hopes for victory hinge on the fitness of Ben Stokes and the team’s ability to capitalize on the pressure they have created thus far in the match.
