The 443rd annual feast festival of the Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica in Thoothukudi commenced on August 5, 2023, with an elaborate flag-hoisting ceremony attended by a large gathering of worshippers. The ceremonial flag was hoisted by Reverend Father Stephen Antony, Bishop of the Thoothukudi Roman Catholic Diocese, at 08:30 local time. He was joined by Reverend Father Starwin, rector and parish priest of the basilica, along with other clergy members.

The event began with morning prayers at 05:00, leading to a high mass during which worshippers chanted “Mariyae Vazhga.” Symbolizing peace, several white doves were released into the sky following the flag hoisting, marking the beginning of the eleven-day festival.

Community Participation and Security Measures

The occasion drew significant attention, prompting a temporary closure of Beach Road for about 30 minutes to accommodate the flow of devotees. Vehicles were diverted to ensure safety as the crowd gathered. In response to the large turnout, local authorities deployed an adequate police force around the basilica. P Geetha Jeevan, Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, and P Jagan, Mayor of Thoothukudi, were among the officials present to witness the ceremony.

To support the needs of the attendees, drinking water was made readily available throughout the festival. Parking facilities were arranged at four different locations to manage the influx of visitors. Additionally, medical teams were on standby to address any emergencies that may arise during the celebrations.

Significance of the Festival

The annual feast festival holds special significance for the local community, with August 5 marking a day of devotion and unity among participants. Worshippers celebrated the occasion by offering milk and bananas to the Virgin Mary, who was adorned with a golden crown, symbolizing reverence and gratitude. The festive atmosphere was palpable, with a sense of community spirit resonating throughout the event.

As the festival progresses over the coming days, it is expected to attract even more visitors, reflecting the enduring cultural and religious traditions of the region. The commitment of local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience underscores the importance of the feast in Thoothukudi’s social calendar.
